(Grammar school entrance exams)

At Explore Apollo tuition, we have developed an 11+ and Entrance Exam program, which is tailored to suit the schools in your local area. Whether your child is sitting a CEM, GL Assessment or local school entrance paper, our lessons are designed to work on all the key elements and skills needed to succeed. Our 11+ lessons are designed to support children not only with their exam technique, but to build the correct foundations needed to progress within their education.

We recommend that children start their 11+ journey in year 4 or earlier. This way, your child will get the knowledge they need at the right pace and be able to learn the knowledge in depth. The 11+ lessons run from September – August every year.

Our 11+ lessons will provide your child with all the skills necessary to succeed in their entrance exams. Our flexible lessons cover verbal and non-verbal reasoning, maths, and English. Our team of exam experts will ensure that your child is fully prepared for their exam.

Starting their 11+ journey


Starting their 11+ journey: We recommend that children start their 11+ journey in year 4 or earlier. This way, your child will get the knowledge they need at the right pace and be able to learn the knowledge in depth.
 
  • Pre-year 4 - Your child can start their 11+ journey before year 4. Our pre-year 4 lessons build strong foundation skills, increasing their chances of 11+ success. Our one-to-one lessons will challenge and stretch your child, increasing their confidence in the 11+ skills. The lessons will focus on core maths and English skills, encouraging your child to become masters of 11+ learning.
  • Year 4 - Our year 4 lessons are designed to introduce exam content, enhance problem solving skills and help introduce exam confidence. Furthermore, our lessons introduce the foundations needed for success, which they can build upon in upcoming years.
  • Year 5 - The 11+ lessons in year 5 develop advanced English and maths skills. They also teach your child how to deal with all types of exam questions, while learning higher-level knowledge. Our year 5 lessons will focus on exam technique, increasing speed and accuracy, and will also develop working under time pressure.
  • Year 6 - Our year 6 lessons will ensure that your child is ready for exam day. We will develop exam skills, by working on past papers, focusing on your child’s weaknesses to ensure they are ready for any challenges the exam proposes.

What do our 11+ lessons cover?

 
  • Verbal reasoning: Verbal reasoning is almost always on the 11+ exam paper. The verbal reasoning section relies heavily on a strong vocabulary that goes beyond the primary curriculum. Our lessons are designed to breakdown these skills, working on problem solving and expanding your child’s vocabulary.
  • English: As English is taught daily in Uk schools, your child should be familiar with many of the topics covered in the 11+ English exams. However, the exams will explore these topics in-depth and at a higher level. Our English 11+ lessons will cover reading comprehension, creative writing, grammar, punctuation, and spelling in depth and above the primary standard, to prepare your child for the exams.
  • Non-verbal reasoning: Non-verbal reasoning tests are designed to assess how well a child can analyse information and solve problems. Non-verbal reasoning is not taught in school and therefore will be something new for your child to learn. At Explore Apollo tuition, our lessons are designed to teach your child the foundations of non-verbal tasks and develop their experience in tackling these types of questions. The key topics that we focus on are geometry, patterns, and sequences.
  • Maths: The 11+ maths tests will cover a huge range of topics and skills. As maths is taught daily in our schools, your child should be familiar with many of the skills covered in the 11+ maths exams but not to a higher level. However, we will explore the national curriculum at an advanced level, preparing your child with past 11+ exam questions. Our 11+ maths lessons cover topics such as problem solving, mental arithmetic, while nailing speed, accuracy, and confidence.

How do our 11+ lessons work?

 
  1. Book your free initial assessment: Our initial assessment allows your tutor to meet your child and see the best place to start. Also, it is a great way for you to meet us and see how we teach, with no commitments.
  2. Join the Apollo family: When you start lessons with us, you will receive a welcome pack. Our 11+ welcome pack is full of great information, including useful tips and helpful information for parents.
  3. Start your 11+ lessons: Your child will work with the same tutor every week; they will also be set home learning activities to practice and apply what they have learnt within the lesson. Your tutor will create each lesson specifically for your child, to target their weakest areas.
  4. Review and feedback: Every half term your child will receive an in-depth feedback sheet. We will always keep you in the loop every step of the way and are always available for a phone call or a quick chat to review progress.

Finn had been helping my 11 year old with his English ready for his SATS. While he’s a bit of a Maths and Science whizz he has always lack enjoyment and confidence in English so was struggling somewhat.

My son has enjoyed working with Finn, he finds him fun and interesting and at the same time is clearly taking on board what he has been teaching him. He will now off his own back pick a word of the day to try and expand his vocabulary. In a recent parents evening I was told that his new found confidence in English is clear and that he is now getting more involved in class lessons rather than shying away and bumbling through. His quality of written work and correct use of punctuation has also come along a lot of the past few months. His teacher commented that the tutoring has certainly given him a boost and she expects him to go in and do well in his exams now.
